Revisiting an old Love.
Before I started my professional journey in photography, I was a graphic designer for about 7 years. It was what helped train my eye with color and composition techniques I find myself using in photography. Design is still something I tinker with every now and then with lookbook or editorial layouts. But haven’t worked with it to the extent I have over this past month.
Recently, my brother-in-law has started streaming on Twitch, where he has already built up a great community; crowdsourcing ideas to create original tracks, and some amazing covers. He commissioned me to join in on the fun and come up with some album art to go along with the covers; in real time, while the track was being made. I knew I would have fun with this, but didn’t realize it would be a (good) challenge.
Having a time constraint to come up with 4 different options, that would then be voted on by the viewers that night, was very daunting. I looked at it as an opportunity to really push and stretch my creativity and resources.
I’ve done a few album cover designs for him and my sister (Us The Duo) in the past. In that process, I had time to listen through the track(s) a few times through to really get a vibe of the song. With this process, I needed to build the design while the track was being made, and that was probably the most challenging part.
It’s definitely been a great exercise in pushing my creative boundaries, and I look forward to seeing what else we’re collectively able to come up with in future streams.
